Pitigliano

The Hotel della Fortezza is located just a few minutes from the town of Pitigliano.  An elegant, comfortable and welcoming accommodation, it is the ideal starting point to discover the beauty of this tuff rock city.

Pitigliano is a charming city hidden in the heart of the Tuff Rock Area in Southern Tuscany. One of the Maremma’s most striking cities, Pitigliano perfectly captures the beauty of the territory where nature and history go hand in hand.

Pitigliano, like many of the towns which surround it, was shaped by the ancient presence of the Etruscans and Romans, who once lived here. According to legend, Pitigliano was founded by two Romans brothers, Petilia and Celiano, who were exiled from their homes after stealing the Emperor’s crown.

The Roman origins that make Pitigliano so unique are keep alive today by the many beautiful monuments and buildings hidden throughout the city. One of Tuscany’s cultural epicentres, Pitigliano never fails to capture visitors with its undisputed beauty and infinite charm.

Among the major monuments that are found in Pitigliano is the Palazzo Orsini, which was once the residence of the powerful medieval Orsini family. The Orsini Park, with its statues and monuments, is also beautiful; as are the fountains in the main square; the famous Roman Aqueduct and the Monument to the Orsini offspring, a block of marble surmounted by a half bear, half lion and built to celebrate the greatness of the family.

Like much of the Maremma, Pitigliano has a very strong religious heritage, as seen in its many splendid churches and cathedrals. These include the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul; the Church of Saint Lucia; the Church of San Rocco; the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Church of San Francesco.
