Sovana

The Hotel della Fortezza is an elegant hotel located only a few minutes from the Roman town of Sovana.
Sovana is certainly one of the most important towns in the Area del Tufo (Tuff Rock Area) and the best representative of the Etruscan-Roman history in all of the Maremma. A town that still bears the scars of ancient rulers, Sovana is truly one of the most beautiful historical and cultural centres in Southern Tuscany.
The town, formerly known as Suan, was founded in Roman times and quickly became one of the empire’s main cities. A centre for trade, the economy and culture, Sovana held a position of great importance for many centuries.
Today Sovana remains incredibly beautiful and incredibly dedicated to preserving the charm and wealth of its history and monuments. A must-see for those who want to discover more about the ancient rulers who have marked Southern Tuscany, Sovana is home to the region’s richest cultural, historical and artistic heritage.
There are many monuments in Sovana that are worth a visit. One of the biggest and most striking is the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, which dates back to the year 1000. Other breathtaking symbols of the past include the Church of San Mamiliano, one of the oldest buildings in the area and the site where very valuable Roman coins were recently found; the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, built in Roman-Gothic style; the Praetorian Palace, which dates back to the 13th century; the Palace of Bourbon-Del Monte, dating back to the late Renaissance; the Aldobrandesca Fortress; the birthplace of Pope Gregory VII and finally Palace dell’Archivio, also dating back to the Middle Ages.
