Our property is nestled in the heart of nature, where you can enjoy the beauty of ancient architecture and experience, even if just for a couple of days, the classic countryside life. The Orsini Fortress of Sorano: A Grand Old Lady

The Orsini Fortress in Sorano is a medieval stronghold with nine centuries of history where you can stay. Located in Tuscany, Sorano is a quiet village, free from mass tourism, with the fortress towering above it. The Etruscans inhabited the area in the 8th century BC, using local tuff rock for agriculture and subsistence. In the 13th century, the Aldobrandeschi family dominated, owning about 100 properties across the region. Through marriage, the Orsini family inherited these estates and built the fortress in the 15th century. The fortress, with its keep and angular bastions, served as a military and agricultural center. Today, the Orsini Fortress offers a glimpse into Tuscany’s medieval history and a unique place to stay.

Unique Rooms: Each room is different from the others and unique in its kind. Some feature exposed beams on the ceiling, some overlook the green Etruscan valley, while others offer views of the charming village of Sorano. All rooms are located within the ancient Fortress, spread across different floors and with varying characteristics. For this reason, we kindly ask you to contact us if you have any specific needs or require special attention so that we can assign you a room that suits you. The Hotel della Fortezza offers two categories of rooms: Superior and Suite.

Our Superior rooms range from approximately 14 to 22 square meters. All Superior rooms come with a double bed or the option to have separate beds, and a private bathroom with a shower. Some of the more spacious rooms are equipped with an extra bed, making them comfortable triple rooms.

The Suites are exclusive and spacious rooms, ranging from 25 to nearly 40 square meters. We want to emphasize that all the rooms are unique, and each one is different from the others! The Suites are larger and feature distinctive Fortezza touches, with different tapestries in each room. Some Suites offer views of the green Etruscan valley, while others overlook the village of Sorano. From the romantic tower suite to the comfortable triple suite on the first floor, we promise that every room will surprise you!

You can enjoy a variety of experiences that will allow you to discover the wonders of Maremma, including a visit to the historic cellar of the fortress, where you can taste local wines and immerse yourself in the area’s winemaking tradition. If you love adventure, join a guided night trek along the Etruscan cave roads, a unique experience under the starry sky. Visit the three tuff cities, Sorano, Sovana, and Pitigliano, authentic gems rich in history and culture. The Orsini Fortress is easily accessible by car, whether you’re coming from Rome or Florence. The A1 motorway and the main regional roads will lead you directly to Sorano.
