- Spring Hikes in Maremma: 4 Must-Do Trails
Spring is the perfect season for exploring: mild temperatures, breathtaking blooms, and trails filled with history, wildlife, and transformation. The province of Grosseto offers a wealth of natural (sometimes wild) and historical sites to discover. In this article, we’ll explore four fantastic hikes to enjoy in spring!
Via Cava di San Rocco – Sorano
Archaeological Park “Città del Tufo” – Sovana
La città perduta – Vitozza
Monte Penna Trekking – Castell’Azzara
The Vie Cave are among the most fascinating mysteries left behind by the Etruscans. Their original function is still debated—some believe they were simple communication routes, others think they were designed to channel rainwater, and some suggest they had a ritualistic purpose due to the presence of necropolises along their paths. Another theory is that they served military purposes, acting as escape routes or strategic passageways during attacks.
The Via Cava di San Rocco is named after the small church on the plateau above and follows one of the most scenic trails in the area. Carved into tuff rock, the path offers fascinating glimpses of history. Along the way, you’ll pass caves once used by the Etruscans, later by the Romans, and repurposed in medieval times as stables and agricultural storage.
The route covers a total of four kilometers (two kilometers each way) with an elevation gain of about 100 meters. If it has rained recently, the terrain can be quite slippery, so sturdy trekking shoes with good grip are essential for safety and stability.
Duration: about 40 minutes.
The Archaeological Park “Città del Tufo,” near Sovana, is one of the most remarkable sites in the region. The necropolis stretches over 1.5 kilometers and features impressive Etruscan tombs carved into the tuff rock, including the renowned Tomba Ildebranda and the Tomba dei Demoni Alati.
The area is intersected by “Il Cavone,” an ancient Etruscan road still in use today. As you walk along this fascinating passage, you’ll spot remnants of Etruscan civilization, including symbols like the swastika and numerous tombs perched on the high margins of the via cava. Another highlight is the Tomba della Sirena, located outside the museum area, with a decorated façade depicting Scylla. Further along, you’ll find more monumental tombs, some of the oldest chamber tombs, and the stunning Via Cava di San Sebastiano. A metal staircase at the end of the route leads to another small necropolis, which also houses a charming rock-hewn chapel.
Duration: about 1 hour.
To reach Vitozza, head to San Quirico, a small village within the municipality of Sorano. From the main square, follow the tourist signs leading to Vitozza. The path begins through the village streets, past vegetable gardens, and soon reaches the first caves—once used as cellars, barns, or chicken coops. A little further on, you’ll arrive at the entrance to the park, where the real adventure begins.
The entire route is well-maintained, with wooden fences marking the trail and clear paths to follow. Informational panels along the way provide insights into the ruins and caves scattered throughout the site. The trail forms a loop and can be walked in either direction.

Duration: about 2 hours.
This hike offers a stunning variety of landscapes, from dense forests of maples and twisted centuries-old ash trees to beeches, hornbeams, and Turkey oaks. Well-marked trails guide you through the local flora and breathtaking mountain views. While some sections can be challenging—especially where the paths are less maintained—the beauty of the scenery makes every effort worthwhile.
Be sure to bring a reliable map and the right gear to fully enjoy the hike.
Duration: about 2 hours.
