- What awaits you at the reopening of the Hotel della Fortezza?
The villages of Tuscany that we recommend visiting in autumn are located in Maremma. This area offers many itineraries and possibilities. It depends on the season and the type of vacation you’re looking for. Here, you will find Tuscany’s most authentic villages. They offer unexpected landscapes, especially in autumn. Among the most beloved villages are Pitigliano, Sorano, and Sovana. Each village has a rich history to tell. You can explore Etruscan necropolises and medieval walls.
Sorano it is considered the oldest of the tuff villages, characterized by numerous houses carved directly into the rock, still visible today. Particularly fascinating are its tuff cellars, where the region’s typical wine has been produced and stored for centuries. The Leopoldino Rock with the Clock Tower, which, along with the walls, were part of the ancient medieval defense system of the village, are definitely worth a visit. Don’t miss a stop at our Hotel della Fortezza, located inside the Orsini Fortress, dating back to the 12th century — it’s like taking a step back in time!
It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It is located just a 10-minute drive from the Hotel della Fortezza. The village is surrounded by numerous Etruscan necropolises. Tuff has shaped various historical buildings in the area. This includes the striking Palazzo Pretorio and the Loggetta del Capitano. Art enthusiasts should not miss the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. It is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. We also recommend visiting the Tuff Archaeological Park. This park features ancient Etruscan roads where you can immerse yourself in nature. The landscape takes on warm autumn colors. Here, you can stroll through the evocative “Vie Cave.” These are narrow gorges carved into the tuff. In Etruscan times, they connected the city of the dead with the city of the living.
Pitigliano, also known as the “Little Jerusalem,” it stands on a tuff cliff. For centuries, it was home to a Jewish community. Many traditional kosher sweets and dishes became typical of Pitigliano. During the Holocaust, many Jews from Pitigliano fled to the countryside. They were supported by the solidarity of their fellow countrymen. We suggest visiting the Synagogue. It features an area dedicated to the purification bath and ovens for unleavened bread. We also recommend visiting the Cathedral. It is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Another site to see is the Medici Aqueduct. This great Renaissance engineering work is the first aqueduct in Maremma. It has the famous Fountain of the Seven Spouts. Other interesting sights include the Aldobrandesque Fortress. You should also see the Well of Palazzo Orsini. It features beautiful bas-reliefs that tell the story of the Orsini family.
In addition to its history, Maremma is famous for its thermal baths. These baths become an unmissable stop in autumn. The Cascate del Mulino in Saturnia and the hot springs of Bagni San Filippo are popular destinations. Both are free thermal baths. You can enjoy natural limestone pools at 37°C. This allows you to immerse yourself in the surrounding landscape with autumn foliage. For those seeking a more exclusive experience, private spas are available. The spas in Saturnia offer access to equipped facilities and wellness centers. Lastly, the Sorano Thermal Baths are a wonderful thermal park. It features pools, a wellness center, and various services. It is located in the heart of the three Tuff Cities.
These Tuscan villages in autumn offer a journey through history and an experience of connection with traditions. Between the thermal waters, walks through the villages, and the discovery of local flavors, the pace of life slows down, rediscovering a more natural rhythm.
